“I do not know mourning”: Gérard Depardieu rarely evokes the death of his son Guillaume

On the occasion of the release of the film Maigret, Gérard Depardieu granted an interview to the Journal du Dimanche. Nearly fourteen years after the death of his son, the actor has agreed to discuss his disappearance.

He claims not to know the mourning… On October 13, 2008, Gérard Depardieu lost his son, Guillaume. At the age of 37, the young actor died of pneumonia contracted during the filming of the film The Childhood of Icard in Romania. While in his latest film, the character of Gérard Depardieu embodies Maigret, who has lost his own daughter, it is in the columns of Sunday newspaper that he assured that the mourning of a child had not brought him closer to the character. “I do not know mourning: my son Guillaume is in me, as are Jean Carmet, Maurice Pialat, François Truffaut or Barbara. If absence weighs us down, it is because of the void it leaves. I make sure to fill it in, telling myself that Guillaume would have liked such and such a thing“, he confided.

Gérard Depardieu took advantage of this interview to ensure that he does not think about death. He indeed explained:Except, sometimes when I fall asleep and think that maybe I won’t wake up the next day. But it’s no worse to die in your sleep, like Michel Galabru. Death doesn’t worry me, life always ends horizontally. What is difficult is what happens before: the suffering, the agony, the impotence of medicine. With all that’s happened to me, road accidents and comas, it’s like I’ve died plenty of times. Even some drunks I’ve taken have made me die! That’s why I stopped.

Gérard Depardieu: “The dead never leave me”

In May 2016, it was in the columns of Parisian that the famous actor had evoked the death of Guillaume Depardieu. He had thus stated:Guillaume really impressed me a lot in Love Your Father. He was a lively and extremely courageous boy. And it’s always very moving to see people who are not afraid to show their fears. William, unfortunately, did not live long enough. But I had, we had our share of love and problems. But now, every time I think of him or he comes back to me, it’s in an image of peace and harmony. Finally, he added:The dead never leave me… What is not normal is that the children die before the father. It’s hard to wear, but the only way to wear it with dignity is for it to resonate within you and make it resonate outside of you.
